for animal welfare
Animal Welfare
High animal welfare standards are not only mandatory for us, but also for our chicken farmers. For the health and welfare of the animals, close cooperation between livestock farmers, our expert advisors for chicken farming, veterinarians and animal welfare officials is very important to us.
Animal welfare in the barn
Every chicken farmer attends to the animals regularly. They constantly monitor the welfare, appearance and behaviour of their animals. The farmers are supported in their tasks in the chicken barn by our expert advisors for chicken husbandry. They also undergo frequent internal and external audits. Moreover, detailed documentation and modern technology boost their efficiency.
Animal Welfare Initiative
German chicken breeding is governed by strict specifications. Group or flock size is not the only criterion for assessing animal welfare. The key factor is that the husbandry conditions are geared to the welfare of the individual animals and their needs. To ensure animal welfare, representatives from agriculture, the meat industry and the food retail sector are working closely together within the setting of the industry initiative ‘Initiative Tierwohl’ (Animal Welfare Initiative), in which we are also involved.
Information on the criteria of the Animal Welfare Initiative can be found at www.initiative-tierwohl.de
Slaughtering
We also ensure responsible handling of animals during slaughter. All employees working with live animals receive special training.

Sustainability
Sustainability is important to us, which is why we continuously work on the social, economic and ecological sustainability of our products and processes.
Resources
With regard to future developments, it is important to remember that the demand for food of animal origin in general, and chicken meat demand in particular, will continue to grow. This increase in demand – in combination with the scarcity of the globally available resource base – will further strengthen the trend towards efficient and resourceful production. It is instrumental for a modern agricultural economy to make use of new scientific findings for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment.
Sustainable water management
The wastewater from our chicken processing plants is treated in our own wastewater treatment plants, which are specially designed using state-of-the-art technology to meet our requirements. A fourth purification stage – known as ozonation – also eliminates potentially multi-resistant germs.
Energy management
We are constantly striving to reduce the energy consumption of our production facilities. We also spare no effort to avoid emissions and to recycle residual materials in a sensible way. Our production facilities are state of the art and have been used by the Federal Environment Agency for a Europe-wide benchmark study. Moreover, renewable energies are playing an increasingly important role for us.
Among other things, we invest in photovoltaic systems and heat recovery systems.
